Curtis Hoekzema

Posted on November 20, 2010 by Carol Steinberg

Went to see paintings of the Huntiington Gardens by Curtis Hoekzema. When I saw the show advertised it was like “I could’ve had a V8!” The gardens are surreal and trippy and a great subject. I like the way he painted them–sort of like Hockney. Lots of interesting marks and patterns. I like how he draws around some of the subject matter, like rocks, with black lines. I remember how one “friend” sneered about my tendency to do that. True, there are no lines around things, but it is a sign of someone who likes to draw, I think. It does have a flattening, design effect but that too is kind of “modern.”
