Training Criminals

Posted on March 16, 2011 by Carol Steinberg

Yesterday evening, en route to teaching my drawing class, I heard a former student’s name on the radio.  He is being charged with hundreds of thousands of dollars of property damage for graffiti vandalism by the city attorney.  I can only hope his time under my tutelage made the damage more aesthetic.  I can’t take full responsibility since apparently his record started before he studied with me.  What I most remember about him was his air of superiority.  Maybe that’s what it takes to make it in the LA art scene–which apparently he’s doing as well, since the city attorney is also seeking to block him from profiting off his street name.  It seems to me they could collect more $ from him if they allow him to use it.

At the end of the evening, one of my students told me that she felt her drawing skills have improved more in the few short weeks of taking my class then in all the years of other classes she had previously taken.  This isn’t the first time one of my students has said this.

Win some, lose some?
