Today I went roaming the neighborhood with my car looking for a place to paint. This is definitely not my usual thing to do and I can see why. We won’t even discuss the packing and shlepping part. It was hazy, parking isn’t that easy to find, and then I saw things that were interesting but it was not advisable to be in someone’s driveway or even the sidewalk…and certainly not the road! (I did that out in Illinois…set up in the middle of the road. My painting buddy at the time told me “You can’t set up in the middle of the road” and I said “Why not?” and sure enough no one ever came.) And it’s cold…and the worst part: the light lasts about 10 or 15 minutes…then you’re kind of winging it. I felt rusty, forgot my camera, my sketch pad…and I forget what else I forgot…maybe painting…but it started coming back. Why does it take a life time to figure stuff out and a week to start forgetting it? Also my back started hurting from the cold and the standing. A hot bath is amazing after such an event. I’ll have to wait until the morning to shoot it…too dark when I got back.
Oh, and what attracted me to this scene: the red, of course, against the green, and the interesting shapes and angles.
