I went up to the San Fernando Valley to deliver a painting for the upcoming show at Galeria Gitana so I thought it might be fun to stop at the Mission and paint. We were there a few years ago…roses everywhere…now they’re all dead…it was kind of bleak and sad. I didn’t see much to paint…except this fountain. It was warm and I brought a little stool…all in all, an easier gig than the day before. There was a photographer and an entire village in ballroom attire for a quincinera with the girl looking more like a bride in a white wedding gown and the others in black and silver sequins cavorting around. And then a dozen guys on skateboards performing right behind me. One came over and said “Awesome!” to me, so I took this as a cue to continue… instead of running for my life. This painting reminds me of a fountain I painted 20 years ago or so with my teacher at the time, Robert Blue… he died when he was younger than I am now….may he rest in peace, still.
