I found this little figurine in a strange curio shop in Pasadena in 2009 and did a painting which has sold a number of prints on a site, and so here we are 6 years later and I thought I’d try something similar. I may try it again…we’ll see. I thought the yellow ranunculi would go with the gold on the figure’s robe….but all in all, it was a gray day and the light went quickly away.
Schlepped out to Malibu to join the California Art Club’s “paint out” up in Malibu. Not too much interaction with the other artists, but it was very peaceful and pretty. Started out gray and then some sun and then back to gray. I enjoyed slashing in the tree branches and was attracted to the reddish gray of the bushes without leaves against the green grass, and of course, the road.
I’ve done this view many times over the years…and I’d like to do many more. I can definitely see progress.
I saw the light streaming through the window on these as the vase sat on the carpet and wanted to try to capture the interesting colors in shadow.
This is the first painting since the 30 in 30. I always experience a bit of “blowback” from cranking so hard. I hadn’t necessarily planned to paint today, but all of a sudden, there was a clearing, and the $5.99 tulips from Trader Joe’s. I had bought a $5 spray of red roses from Whole Foods that died almost immediately…gotta go return them. This was also an attempt to work larger…than the usual daily painting size. The problem was the light left fairly quickly.
