This painting is the last one I did in North Carolina. B insisted that we needed to see the falls and so, although I kept debating whether it was worth driving there in the limited time we had, we eventually got there. B schlepped the equipment up the trail for me and then I had to paint really fast because we had limited time before we had to drive somewhere 3 hours away by 10 pm. I have to say this painting took a lot of bravery–in my background, painting a waterfall would be just verbotten–too cliche from the get go…and yet, really for me, there was nothing cliche about it…as much or more of a challenge than anything so I jumped in (not literally) and just painted as fast as I could. It was really touch and go to make all that grandeur work on a small canvas…and so many points I felt it was not going to work out, but I kept working with it…I think it finally came together….and then we hiked back out and raced the 3 hours to Chapel Hill–our last adventure before the airport home.
