Valentina

Posted on February 14, 2018 by Carol Steinberg

Valentina, gouache, 12 x 9

Now there’s synchronicity–Valentina on Valentine’s Day.  You know, the first Valentina I ever met was a lovely 19 year old girl who I chatted with in the elevator of the apartment building I grew up in.  She was later murdered out front of the building in the street by “Son of Sam.”  I can’t believe we’ve gotten to a point where the “good ol’ days” were when these sick people only killed one of two people at a time.  Anyway, I’ve never forgotten her….it’s a lovely name…and may she and all those murdered senselessly rest in peace.  I am saddened by this state of affairs and pray there is a way to make it stop. One thing is certain, a vote for/support of Trump is a vote for this to continue or even worsen.

Oh, Carol, what a story. There’s a feeling of haunting in her eyes, even though the day is full of sunshine. The dappled light on her cheeks through her hat is just wonderful.
As to Trump and the gang of monsters who have taken over our country, until the majority of people are truly hurting they won’t go into the streets and demand action. We need demonstrations every week. We can no longer passively stand by while they dismantle every just right we rightfully deserve. The entire system was designed for them to maintain their power. Every day I follow the news and am constantly horrified and dismayed. In Spain there is so much corruption, but the people do not have guns. There is so much aggression in the US today. I could go on for hours…since the late ’60s I’ve been demonstrating against the crimes of the US. Now the crimes are being committed by the US to its own citizens. Sorry to ramble here. If you don’t want to post this, I totally understand. It’s probably not the place to vent.

Hey, Laurelle, I think every place is the place now…regardless of what idiots say…and I started it. Yes, we must unite to stop this!

Beautitful portrait, full of light and Joy !
What a contrast with her tragic death and the horror of yesterday !
As a French-Canadian, I don’t really understand why it seems so impossible to stop the NRA power and limit the posssession of guns !

Thank you, Martine! Just to be clear–this is a different Valentina. I actually hadn’t heard the name in like 40 years–but it’s come up for me lately. I don’t understand it either!
