30 Paintings in 30 Days, Sept. 2018 Collage

30 Paintings in 30 Days, Sept. 2018 Collage

This month just flew by–with a mini-tantrum or two somewhere maybe week 3 or 4.  Putting this collage together, I see it as a kind of ode to summer melting in to fall…The bottom right–Day1–was a fun oil pastel and the top left–Day30–is an acrylic gouache.  Mixed in with regular gouache, oil, watercolor…I have acrylic and chalk pastels…but I did not use them.  My fascination with the view I’m lucky to have increased enormously…and my neighborhood too…aptly named Palms–for real! So many kind, supportive comments.  Thank you if you left any of them. And thanks for stopping by to see the end result.  I’ve done this challenge 10 times…maybe I’m finally getting somewhere??

“We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
Through the unknown, remembered gate
When the last of earth left to discover
Is that which was the beginning;
At the source of the longest river
The voice of the hidden waterfall
And the children in the apple-tree
Not known, because not looked for
But heard, half-heard, in the stillness
Between two waves of the sea.”

This quote from T. S. Eliot….hmmm, probably read it first at 17…pretty sure I did not appreciate it then…but now I see why he’s so famous…lol.  Anyway, I’ve heard the first line quoted many times…but the rest is really lovely.   Until we meet again.  Carol.

Moon Rise Over West LA

Moon Rise Over West LA, acrylic gouache, 6 x 6

I think this is kind of a poetic ending to this month and this series…the day ends…but soon another will dawn…and if we’re lucky, we’ll see it…and even luckier, get to paint!

Moonrise Over West LA

Moonrise Over West LA, watercolor, 16 x 12

I did this while listening to the Kavanaugh circus.  Maybe that’s why it was such a struggle.  Or I’m just new to watercolor.  It is kind of unforgiving.  Like life.  Some things you cannot just undo or paint over. But then there’s free samples of acrylic gouache (or Lindsey Graham?)!  Tune in for that one (not Graham–tune him out!)…

Vignette of Overland White Building

Vignette of Overland White Building, watercolor, 12 x 16

Running out of titles and energy…but I do like this series and glad I decided to stick it out.  This is a watercolor version of yesterday’s oil…and yes, different times of day, weather, etc.  Except that it’s really too hazy in the mornings…hurts my eyes.

Overland at 3

Overland at 3, oil, 4 x 6

Another small sketch.  This small canvas paper is very freeing–though it shouldn’t be!  I don’t know why I keep painting this building.  I guess the lighting is interesting and also the fact that it wasn’t there for at least 20 years that I know of.

Palms View Watercolor

Palms View Watercolor, watercolor, 16 x 12

Playing around with watercolors on my porch on another gray day. On a hot pressed watercolor pad I’ve had for over 10 years.  I got it to take a botanical illustration class and never used it after that…until now.  This kind of grew across the page.

Dappled Driveway

Dappled Driveway, oil, 8 x 8

Oil version, as promised.  I had time to work on it today–the car is quite complex.  Not sure what I’ll be doing, if anything, these last 5 days….count down!

Watercolor Palm

Watercolor Palm, watercolor, 16 x 12

I’m still feeling like I may not make it to the end of the challenge.  Today, Sunday, got up late, farmers market, yoga, lunch…and then, too late to do an oil….so I thought I’d try to just do something simple and easy enough to get done before the light for taking a photo was completely gone.  I’m actually glad I persisted…but sill, what 6 days more?  Sigh.

Dappled Driveway

Dappled Driveway, gouache, 6 x 6

I don’t usually, or ever, paint cars (except this week)–harder than I imagined.  My partner loves feather grass…and the dappled light was the clincher.

Palm at Off-ramp

Palm at Off-ramp, oil, 8 x 6

This is an oil version of yesterday’s gouache. I have ideas for the next couple days…and then…we’ll see.
