The theme for tomorrow’s #AugustDrawingChallenge is Rain…but I decided to tackle it today because I have been meaning to do this one for a while. I have the drawing..but I may put some more work into it…so maybe I’ll add it here later.

Meditation + Ranunculi, Gray Afternoon, 12 x 9, oil, $325
I found this little figurine in a strange curio shop in Pasadena in 2009 and did a painting which has sold a number of prints on a site, and so here we are 6 years later and I thought I’d try something similar. I may try it again…we’ll see. I thought the yellow ranunculi would go with the gold on the figure’s robe….but all in all, it was a gray day and the light went quickly away.
Topanga State Park Hill, oil, 8 x 8, $325
We were out at Topanga again, this time to pick up my painting from the gallery. Our last time in Topanga probably for a while. I like the hippie dip vibe up there and the country feeling but I don’t know how people live on those crazy roads where I always feel like I’m taking my life in my hands. Anyways, I liked this scene at the entry to the Topanga State Park. It ordinarily wouldn’t look like much but since I was hunting for something to paint, I liked the road and the green of the grass and the aerial perspective color shifts and the shape of the sky left by the trees. After, we went to the town area, and into a little “artisanal food” store, where a juice was $12. But they wound up telling us about how cashews grow and how they eat them in Viet Nam and showed us a beautiful image of them on the computer. It was worth the money for the “high vibration” experience.
Peppers, Tomato on Porch (Creamsickle), oil, 8 x 8, $325
I tried to go to yoga this morning and there was no parking so it was Plan B. I figured I could finally squeeze in a stop at the thrift store so I went over there…They had hundreds of dishes but none of them appealed to me. They also seem to have ruined what had been a treasure trove of clothes…ah, well, the waterhole has dried up. The funny thing was the “plate” I was wishing I had turned out to be hanging out under a bowl by my front door all along. Isn’t that the way? Now, let’s see if it turns up in a painting any time soon. I put an orange and cream cloth together which color combination reminds me of “creamsickles”–a word that this computer program doesn’t seem to recognize so I guess that is dating myself? I bought these for a chili dinner tonight. It was pretty hot today…they practically cooked while I was painting them. I guess I was hungry for some color after my relatively subdued painting from yesterday. Thanks for stopping by. A week left to the “challenge”!!!
Before the Ratatouille, oil, 8 x 8, $325
I thought I’d give this eggplant one more shot before it gets eaten. I’m glad I did and really like the dish towel here that I’ve been wanting to paint for a long time. I had a red of some sort that was globbed shut and I pushed the paint out only to realize later that somehow the “cap” had gotten on the floor and my barefeet…and the new carpet….it’s funny how I was just reading about a carpet disaster involving a roomba and a dog…this is better, but it was a challenge to get it cleaned up. Oh well, still happy with this piece.
Georgina St., oil, 8 x 10, $325.
This was done the day after Thanksgiving. It was a beautiful day, so peaceful…such a quiet day on a quiet street in LA. We hardly saw any people besides an older couple the male partner of which was named Bert too. The thing I felt most was just this deep sense of peace and I hope some of that made its way into this piece (ha!).
Thanksgiving Foliage, oil, 10 x 8, $325.
We went to see Big Hero on Thanksgiving morning. I didn’t really want to go but B had free tix. Hardly anyone in the theater in Beverly Hills. It was very well done and got us both crying. Then we raced off so I could sneak in a quick painting en plein air before the light left. I’m wowed by the deciduous trees around here now. This was very satisfying. And then we went home and made our feast for two.

I was contemplating creating another still life set up, but this accidental arrangement caught my eye so I went for round 3 of these players.
Santa Clarita Demo, oil, 18 x 14, $325.
It was 106 degrees the evening I went up to Santa Clarita to do this demo. It was the second time with this group. Very enjoyable.
