This is the last of the tulips from the series. This was almost completely closed when I started to draw and paint it…but shortly after wound up like this…kind of like time lapse photography.
I had 13 paintings of food delivered to Galeria Gitana the day I painted this for the Matter of Taste exhibit that will open on April 11. I realized that one of the things that was making this set up pop for me was the white of the table and the wall, so I zoomed out to paint this.
I still had the tulips so I decided to paint them again. At first I was going to paint the curvy clear glass vase, but then I just realized, in a smallish painting, this would work better. The evolution of the last 3 pieces is kind of interesting.
Okay, so this happened sooner than I anticipated…going bigger….and hopefully even bigger soon. Meanwhile, I enjoyed the freedom that the extra space allowed. The spreading tulips needed their space!
Special on tulips at Whole Foods today. I have 3 vases to choose from. I was going to paint these even larger…but decided to rein it in. I’m reminding myself to paint smaller and more often…though the temptation to go larger is there…and I will do so soon…but I’d like it to be on a day that I’ve already been painting a lot in the days before. I answered the phone during this painting, which turned out to be a mistake…Oh well, live and learn.
This is the first painting since the 30 in 30. I always experience a bit of “blowback” from cranking so hard. I hadn’t necessarily planned to paint today, but all of a sudden, there was a clearing, and the $5.99 tulips from Trader Joe’s. I had bought a $5 spray of red roses from Whole Foods that died almost immediately…gotta go return them. This was also an attempt to work larger…than the usual daily painting size. The problem was the light left fairly quickly.
